Mortgage Mole: Running to plan

Intrepid Mole,
digging up
the stories
behind
the news

Running to plan

Mole would like to congratulate all the runners in this year’s London Marathon, but particularly Investec’s Peter Izard, who ran for the UK Sepsis Trust, and Paul Broadhead of the Building Societies Association, who ran for housing charity Shelter.

Between them the duo raised nearly £7,000 for their respective causes.

Mole understands that merely walking was “a challenge” for Paul in the aftermath of the epic run, but that he already has thoughts of entering the 2018 marathon.

Well done to Peter (left) and Paul for a fantastic achievement.

Youthful enthusiasm

Mole’s pals at Mortgage Strategy receive more unusual mortgage press releases than you can shake a stick at, but they can confidently say they’ve never been sent one on the subject of new bowls sporting equipment – until now.

Step forward the staff of Earl Shilton Building Society, who have donated money towards a new bowls mat for a pensioners’ sports club, the confusingly titled Sharnford Over-60s Youth Club.

Mole understands the donation from the big-hearted Earl Shilton gang has given a new lease of life to the club, which helps older members of the Leicestershire community relive their youth club days. A worthy cause, he thinks.

Will-ing ambassador

The rumours have been confirmed – digital lender  Atom Bank has hired pop star Will.i.am as a “strategic adviser”, according to
headlines seen by Mole last week.

In a clever bit of PR, the lender said its latest appointment would give it an “external perspective on culture, philanthropy and technology”.

Of course, having a trusted cultural icon as an ambassador with the firm also can’t hurt when it comes to selling a product very often associated with large, faceless and generally unhip lenders, Mole muses…

Home free!

You may remember Mole’s scribblings from a few weeks ago about Clydesdale and Yorkshire banks offering one youngster the chance to compete to live rent-free for a year in a Kensington penthouse, and for help saving money.

Well, the lucky winner has been selected.

It may not surprise Mole’s readers to hear that hopeful contestants queued from before dawn to take part in gardening, cookery and DIY challenges.

The eventual winner was 32-year-old London digital consultant Ryan Crabbe, who Mole understands is now the most envied individual who ever aspired to own a home.

Well done, Ryan.
